Perceptions

This series is the result of years spent studying and observing the way that vision works. In 2013, I underwent two surgeries to implant monofocal intraocular lenses in both of my eyes. Last year I began Perceptions with the hope that it would help people to understand how I see things. Human beings are very visual. Mechanically, psychologically, and philosophically, what we see affects who we are and how we process information. In the most fundamental ways, we see the world as we know it to be true. I’ve never had the comfort that comes with knowing that what I see is real. Focus and distance are challenges that I have struggled to overcome, and as a result they have given me a much greater appreciation for what I can see. In keeping with the idea of mirroring my own visual experience, all distortion is created in-camera.
